View NotesDrivin n Cryin 1988-03-19 The Royal Peacock Atlanta GA Late Show 1hr 43min Kevn Kinney - guitar, vocals Tim Nielson - bass, vocals Jeff Sullivan - drums Buren Fowler - guitar The boys headed into 1988 with Buren's guitar stylings and a bunch of new tunes both welcome additions to the shows. The Royal Peacock is an Atlanta institution on famed Auburn Avenue. An old club that was host to jazz and soul greats in the 50s and 60s. For some reason they hosted rock shows in the late 80s and Drivin n Cryin played a two night run on 3/18 and 3/19 with early and late shows both nights. They were true separate shows with a ticket for each show. I guess I decided I couldn't afford 4 tickets, 8 with the ol' lady, so I opted for the 2nd night. In this late set they really cut it lose. I really like what Buren is beginning to do with tasty leads and fills on the folky tunes like Tina's Grocery and Catch The Wind and McDougal Blues. This McDougal Blues, in fact, is my favorite one ever. Totally unique...I never heard this arrangement again. All electric, with a Stonsey guitar that just kills me. I wish they kept this approach with this tune but it's an acoustic standard so forget it Dave. The new songs are standouts, as usual on these early '88 shows with Buren settling in...and dig that R&B intro at the top of the set. Way cool! Only drawbacks here are the trebly, too loud PA mix, the horrible guest vocals on Gimme Shelter (again) and the stoner who grabbed the mic and declared his love for Ecstasy during Malfunction Junction. Scratch that..that guy was hilarious.

This early set is well played but you can tell they are easing off, saving the jams and flourishes for the late show. the new tunes get the best workouts. The slowness disease is creeping in and is very evident on the new arrangement of Legal Gun. That one really needs to be fast, Kev. He knows. Straight To Hell is still new enough to not be a pain and 1988, the 2nd reworking of Brother Bannister, is a decent set closer.
