View NotesDrivin n Cryin 1988-07-29 The Uptown Lounge Athens GA 1 hr 43 min Kevn Kinney - guitar, vocals Tim Nielson - bass, mandolin, vocals Jeff Sullivan - drums Buren Fowler - guitar, banjo Now this was a great weekend. The fetching Mrs. Oy and I bopped over to Athens for two DNC shows on Friday and Saturday nights and secured a motel room so we could enjoy maximum revelry, at least for the first night. I'd forgot how good this show was until I dusted off the tape for immortalization. The venue was a storefront club and it was PACKED. I had just decided to try taping from near the front instead of the "sweet spot." This had good and bad repercussions for this show. The good - the guitars and bass come through really well. My thought with this idea was to get as close to Kevn's amp as possible. Too many shows with overpowering drums from the sweet spot. I actually wound up pretty far to stage left in front of Tim so the bass is really clear but both guitars sound great on the tape as well. The bad - the vocals don't come through as well because the PA sound is washing over my head, of course. The really bad - I was crushed and slammed by sweaty UGA frat boys and jocks...absolutely SQUASHED! You can hear my struggles on the tape, especially on...dammit...Lemonade Stand which is one of my favorite DNC tunes ever. First I'm knocked around by slammers and then I lose my glasses. You can hear the dropout and then a muted section as I scramble around on the floor looking for my glasses. You havn't truly lived until you feel around on the floor in a crowded pit while sweaty UGA frat boys stomp on you. A real shame...Lemonade Stand is one of my snakebit taping tunes, like Your Saving Grace, that I always had some problem capturing. There are many highlights to this tape. Along with the rare Lemonade Stand, they did an equally rare We Will Rock You, possibly my favorite DNC cover. Tiny screw up in that one, too, as apparently the deck slipped into pause for a few seconds but I saw that quickly and fixed it. Brother Bannister's Bandwagon played properly instead of Soul Road style...The Friend Song played uptempo, which is the good way, to my ear...an early Wrapped In Sky...a tasty Buren decorated Straight To Hell with extemporaneous lyrics and, instead of drunk frat boys singing along to that song, drunk frat boys singing along to Blue Ridge Way. They even outsing Kevn, who goes horribly off key. And, oh yeah, a bizarre jazz/poetry band intro by someone named Fast Freddy. All in all, a very wonderful evening...and a good tape.
