View NotesDrivin n Cryin 1989-07-07 Fox Theatre Atlanta GA 110 minutes Kevn Kinney - Guitar, vocals Tim Nielson - bass, vocals Jeff Sullivan - drums Buren Fowler - guitar This is a noteworthy show for a few reasons. First reason - first time DNC played the Fox, headlining, no less. Regarded all around town as proof of hometown boys made good, Second reason is, this show has the BEST audience you will ever hear on tape. Drive heads know what I'm talking about when I say their audience is usually...meh....a couple of guys screaming their heads off (me) and a room full of passive starers. Not this Fox crowd. Hot. Third reason is...I shot video for this show! But I don't diddly damn have it!@*&?#! A gear rental guy I knew got into lighting and it was his light rig at this show. He wanted me to shoot it with his camera as a demo for his lights and I was down with that. I settled into the light booth feeling like hot shit setting up the camera. Then what's his name told me, "I only want a wide shot. Stay wide...to show the lights." Well...dang...OK. That knocked me off center and then I really screwed up. I sat my audio rig down on a hard road case. Just a small deck and a mic, the low frequencies made it rattle and hum around the top of the case. I didn't realize it, busy with the shoot, until I looked down during Peacemaker and saw it slowly rotating. I don't remember what I did with it, but the tape improves immensely after the fifth track. I cleaned up what I could up to that point and include those first songs, despite the resonance noise. After hearing the racket from the road case vibration on the beginning of the audio recording, I was walking around bummed but thinking, oh well, at least I'll have my copy of the video tape. Not to be. The sumbitch never gave me a dub and I think about that and hit stuff til this day. I thought the whole audio tape was messed up but, years later, I finally listened to the whole thing and found out that it clears up. As for the show...a scorcher. Gogo girls in white each side of the stage during Malfunction Junction. I swear. Rockin' Wild Dog Moon opener. House For Sale, Catch The Wind, an early Wrapped in Sky, a sweet, pre-anthem Straight To Hell and a strong Check Your Tears are the standouts for me.
