View NotesDrivin n Cryin 1989-09-19 Victorian Amphitheatre Macon GA 80 minute Kevn Kinney - guitar, vocals Tim Nielson - bass, mandolin, vocals Jeff Sullivan - drums Buren Fowler - guitar Late again. The show was in Macon and I was married so you know what happened. Despite my best efforts, I was late again. I didn't miss any music but most of the tape is from the back of the place. I like to get to the show plenty early and stake out some space in the sweet spot. The Victorian Amphitheatre sounded pretty cool but when we found it, it was essentially an empty lot with a stage at one end and gingerbread wood trim on the fence and stage and stuff. The Scarlet Woman and I entered just in time and floundered around at the back of the crowd. The band fired up and, though it didn't seem like much of a problem from my vantage point, there was frantic usher and police activity at the front, where rock n rollers were doing what they do - boogien.' Remarks from the stage between the first two tunes had no effect, I guess, because as they kicked into Wrapped in Sky, the show was stopped.. Then followed a sometimes humorous bit of stage banter in which the promoter hoarsely berates the rockin' kids and Kevn and Tim try to diffuse the situation. I was in the back, but it looked like to me a pretty normal deal. Maybe it was worse than it looked. Finally, Kevn gets the crowd to back up and they resume. Seems like they would have just gone into an acoustic set to mellow things out, but Kevn launches into Saddle. Yeah, that'll calm things down, I thought, but the crowd stayed back and a pretty decent set followed. The recording get iffy at times because I was wandering, trying to get a better, closer spot, holding up that mic like a dweeb. Macon has always been a weird town. Old timers may remember Machine Gun Ronnie Thompson, the Mayor in the seventies who earned that name honestly, arming himself thusly while leading police operations. Way before the 21st Centuiry trend of military gear in local police departments, he outfitted the Macon cops with an armored personnel carrier. When the second Atlanta Pop Festival was held a little further South in Byron in 1970, the official printed materials from the promoters included this warning for traveling hippies, "Stay out of Macon!"
